Tibetan children, from exile to hope (52 mn)

VOD

The Tibetan Children's Villages are the main institution of Tibet in exile. It was founded by the Dalai Lama in 1960 following China's invasion of Tibet in 1950, and the exile of over 150,000 Tibetans to India in 1959.

They are so important to him that he entrusted one of his sisters for the direction of the center. They are like villages within villages. They are affiliated to the international organization "SOS Children's Villages". It allows them to access to the system of sponsorship of children's education by godmothers and godfathers from all over the world, because most of their parents do not have the means to pay for their education. There are a dozen of them throughout India, which welcome more than 6,000 schoolchildren from 3 to 18 years old.

We will discover two of them, the one in Dharamsala, the largest and oldest (it is also their capital where the Dalai Lama lives), as well as Choglamsar in Ladakh, in the middle of the Himalayas, on the border of Tibet colonized by China. In these two villages live 2,500 schoolchildren. Most of them are accommodated in family houses. They live in complete autonomy. The pupils study, play, but also work. The children take care of themselves under the supervision of the aya, their second mother. They do the housework, prepare breakfast. They even do some gardening to liven up the ordinary. We will get to know a family with three generations living under the same roof.

We will also share the daily life of the Tibetans. We will attend the celebrations of Losar, their New Year, the annual commemoration of the Tibetan drama of March 10, 1959, a revolt against the Chinese invaders that ended in a bloodbath. In Ladakh, we will experience the arrival of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his exceptional visit to the children's village.

In these villages, where schoolchildren are offered a complete education, their adage "Come to learn, leave to serve" is not an empty phrase, but what happens to them when they leave this institution?
