El Hadji Abdou Kader Beye, a Senegalese businessman in his fifties, takes a third wife, a sign of social and economic success. A grand celebration is organized for the wedding, attended by the entire local bourgeoisie as well as his first two wives. That evening, however, he is unable to consummate the marriage: he is struck with impotence. He believes himself to be the victim of a curse, the xala, cast upon him by a peasant whom he dispossessed. Humiliated, the flamboyant modern entrepreneur turns to tradition.
