Born on 7 November 1917, the day of the Russian Revolution, Lev Efimovitch Kerbel began creating stone and marble sculptures at an early age. After the Second World War, he became the official sculptor of the Soviet regime. He created the statue of Karl Marx in the centre of Moscow, as well as those of Lenin and other monumental works scattered throughout the USSR and its sister countries. He received numerous awards, including the Lenin Prize and the Goethe Prize in Germany. Shortly before his death, this artistic symbol of the Soviet Empire and Communism tells his story.
