Un très jeune prince passe quelques jours dans un palace au bord de la mer. Il prépare ses examens sous la férule d’un précepteur à l’allure désuète et s’ennuie ferme. Il est très attiré par le phare au bout de la plage. N’y tenant plus, il fugue et rencontre Karol, le gardien misanthrope qui soigne les oiseaux blessés qu’il recueille. Karol s’attache à l’enfant et lui ouvre les portes de son domaine, « Taxandria », le royaume de l’éternel présent.

C’est l’histoire d’un déjeuner entre amis, afin de redonner le moral à l’un d’entre eux, fraîchement largué par sa compagne. S’ensuit une conversation à bâtons rompus sur les rapports hommes femmes.

Zoran est un gosse très gourmand et plutôt rondelet. Ses occupations, en 1954, se partagent entre son amour pour une orpheline de guerre et sa passion pour Tito. Il va être amené à participer à « La marche des enfants au pays natal de Tito » qui se terminera par une réception chez le dictateur.
